Jörg Widmann is a true magician of sound on the clarinet. This time he is playing the brilliant concerto by Carl Maria von Weber, a rousing piece on the threshold of the classic to the romantic era, which demands everything in terms of virtuosity, bravura and poetry that the instrument has to offer. The Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra performs under the direction of the Czech conductor and composer Petr Popelka. At the beginning of this “Spring Concert” is Franz Schubert’s 4th symphony. It is not as “tragic” as its nickname, but is one of those works in which the young man, with surprising harmonic ideas and unmistakable melody, sought his very own symphonic path after Haydn and Mozart and alongside Beethoven. In April, spring can no longer be overlooked, and Robert Schumann’s first symphony fits in with this, which not only bears this pleasant time of year in the title, but also conveys it in sound. A genius hopefully paves his way here. But Schumann’s motto is also a spring message, when the days are getting longer and the sun is beginning to warm: “Send light into the depths of the human heart – the artist’s job!”
