The Schafberg is a famous mountain in the Lake District near Salzburg. The summit is at 1782 meters above sea level and can be reached by cog railway. An observation platform offers breathtaking views of the nearby mountains and lakes of the Lake District and the alpine foothills.
A cog railway takes you up the Schafberg in around 35 minutes. During this time, it covers a distance of 5.85 kilometers and a difference in altitude of 1190 meters. With this proud achievement, it is the steepest cog railway in Austria! But don’t worry: A ride on the Schafbergbahn is a wonderfully relaxed and comfortable experience. You can peacefully watch the passing landscape of the Lake District through the large windows. Probably the last part of the rout is the most spectacular. The locomotive drives very close to the impressive rocks. After you have passed two tunnels you will reach the mountain station.
At the summit of Schafberg you will enjoy breathtaking views. The Schafberg is considered the mountain with most beautiful panoramic views. When the weather is clear, you have a 360 degree view over the glittering lakes of the Salzkammergut and the foothills of the Alps including Lake Wolfgang, Lake Irrsee, Lake Mondsee, Lake Fuschl and Lake Chiemsee.
A ride up the Schafberg is particularly attractive during the Christmas season. Our Singing XMas Tour (Advent Train) takes you up to the middle station, the Schafbergalm station at an altitude of 1,364 meters. Not only a Christmassy decorated Advent kiosk with hot drinks awaits you there, but also an impressive, atmospheric view over the magical winter landscape of the Lake District. Immerse yourself in a backdrop of a thousand lights and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere of the Wolfgangsee Advent.
