Exciting news for Sound of Music fans: Starting in spring 2026, Salzburg will open the brand-new “Sound of Music Museum” in Hellbrunn — right next to the iconic Gazebo from the movie. It’s a place where film history and the real-life story of the Trapp family come together.
Salzburg is preparing for a new cultural and tourism highlight. The Sound of Music Museum Salzburg will open its doors in mid-2026. It will stand on the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace. Since both the city and the province support the project, it has a strong foundation. As a result, the museum aims to welcome international guests as well as Salzburg locals.
The world-famous Sound of Music Pavilion, where the beloved “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” scene was filmed, already welcomes visitors in Hellbrunn Park. Moreover, this site is a key stop on our Private Sound of Maria Tour, where guests experience the original film locations firsthand. Just a few steps away, historic buildings — such as the former gamekeeper’s house and the coach house — are undergoing restoration. Soon, they will house the new Sound of Music Museum. Importantly, the Salzburg Museum, one of Austria’s most respected cultural institutions, will operate it. Therefore, the exhibition will reflect both the legacy of the film and the true story of the Trapp family.

The museum offers much more than a tribute to a Hollywood classic. For example, it will include:
Furthermore, the museum will provide interactive and educational displays. Not only that, it will also offer rare insights for film enthusiasts, music lovers, and cultural historians alike.
