The tour starts after a personal and musical welcome from our entertainers Dana Hammett and Dmitry Iogman in front of the Mirabell Palace.
The group will proceed to the first stop, the lakeside palace known as Schloss Mirabell (2). In addition to the nearby Frohnburg Palace, this rococo mansion was used to depict the front of the Trapp family’s villa. Primarily interior scenes were filmed here as well, and it was also the location for the scene in which the children fall into the adjacent lake. Scenes for songs like “Edelweiss“, “The Lonely Goatherd“, “So Long, Farewell” and “My Favorite Things” were shot here. During the tour, the palace will be viewed from the opposite side of the lake, which offers the very best view of it.
The next stop is offering a view of the Nonnberg Abbey (3). This is exactly where the story of The Sound of Music began. The Nonnberg Abbey is the oldest convent still in existence north of the Alps. In the film, this nunnery served as the backdrop for the scenes for the song “Maria” and “I have confidence“. At this stop, you’ll will enjoy a magnificent view of the Alps and the Nonnberg Abbey.
Then on to the Frohnburg Palace (4), which was also chosen as the location for exterior shots of the Trapp family’s mansion. This is where Maria danced along the tree-lined Hellbrunner Allee to the song “I Have Confidence“. We’ll view the Frohnburg from inside the bus. Today it houses part of the Mozarteum University, one of the world’s most famous music conservatories.
Continuing on, the tour takes us to the world-famous Gazebo, which now stands in the park surrounding Hellbrunn Palace (5). The romantic love scene between Maria and Georg was filmed inside it, as well as the scene for the song “Sixteen Going on Seventeen“.
From Hellbrunn, the tour heads out into the nearby lake district known as the Salzkammergut. The fabulous scenery around the lakes Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee (7) ,where“Do-Re-Mi” was shot, also served as the primary backdrop for the aerial shots at the beginning of the film.
After a brief stop to take photos from a spectacular viewing platform, the bus makes its way to the idyllic lakeside village of Mondsee (8). This is where the beautiful basilica stands in which Maria and the Baron von Trapp said, “I do” in the wedding scene.
