“Silent Night, Holy Night” is one of the world’s most popular Christmas carols (original title: “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht”.) This song has been listed in the UNESCO’s Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria since 2011. Join soprano Dana Hammett on a musical journey of discovery to the site of the very first performance of this most-famous Salzburg Christmas carol – singing included!
“Silent Night, Holy Night” was performed for the first time on December 24, 1818 in the town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg. Why did this song become so famous and how did it come about? Who were its composers and where and under what circumstances did they live and work? You’ll learn all this – and much more – on our Singing Silent Night Tour to the “Silent Night Chapel.” Our soprano, Dana, is looking forward to welcoming you!
On this half-day tour, Dana and your personal chauffeur will pick you up at your hotel in a luxurious Mercedes minivan. Following a musical welcome, you’ll soon find yourself in another realm as we transport you through the snow-covered Alpine foothills.
After a short stop at the Maria Plain pilgrimage church standing northeast of the city of Salzburg, the journey continues on to the idyllic town of Oberndorf. This is where “Silent Night, Holy Night” was first performed. On the ride through the region’s picturesque landscape, you will learn a lot about the origin of the song and Austrian Christmas traditions. Once you arrive in Oberndorf, you will have some time to soak up the romantic atmosphere of the Christmas market before walking to the Silent Night Chapel. Here, the story of what is likely the world’s most popular Christmas carol comes to life. Afterwards, the minivan will take you back to Salzburg, where the composer of “Silent Night” spent his childhood and youth.
Immerse yourself in the past, experiencing history, lovely landscapes and music! Dana is looking forward to spending a musical Yuletide afternoon with you in the very place where one of the world’s most beloved Christmas carols was created – presenting you with an experience you’ll long remember.
