The town of St. Wolfgang (Lake District) lies at the foot of the Schafberg and is, along with St. Gilgen and Strobl, one of the three towns on Lake Wolfgangsee. St. Wolfgang can be easily reached by water, thanks to the Wolfgangsee Shipping Company. St. Wolfgang is the starting point for excursions aboard the historic rack railway up the Schafberg. During the Christmas season, the Wolfgangsee Advent is celebrated near the Weisse Rössl hotel. It’s a Christmas market that makes children’s eyes sparkle – and yours too!
Riding aboard a historic ship from St. Gilgen, you’ll feel the magic of St. Wolfgang even from out on the water. The town gained international renown through the film “Im Weissen Rössl am Wolfgangsee” starring Peter Alexander. The hotel still stands in the center of St. Wolfgang and is a well-known tourist attraction.
The Schafberg is best known for its traditional Schafbergbahn, which is the steepest steam-driven rack railroad in Austria. As part of our Singing XMas Tour (Advent Train), we will take the Advent Train up to the Schafbergalm, located at 1364 meters above sea level, where the Salzkammergut is literally at your feet. The Wolfgangsee Advent is celebrated throughout the Christmas season. St. Wolfgang’s Christmas market is one of the loveliest in all of Austria. Mulled wine and hot punch will put you in a Christmas mood and the roasted chestnuts, gingerbread and baked apples for sale at the market’s little stands will tempt you with their traditional Christmas aromas. This market sparkles and glitters wherever you look.
